  1. T-I read that Achilles dragged Hector around Troy three or four times.
EX-"I put to my lips the hands of the man who killed my son. Those words stirred within Achilles a deep desire to grieve for his own father" (Homer 362).
T-Why a sudden change of heart in Achilles?
Y-It made me feel shocked that Achilles was being such an awful guy then suddly caved and let Priam have his son back.

  2. From Ian: T- This section of reading was about Achilles being upset that Hector killed Patroclus. Achilles would drag Hector around but Apollo protected his body. Then the gods decided they felt bad for Troy and would guide Priam to speak with Achilles and they told Achilles to agree to return Hector. However, Achilles is too smart and won't allow this.
EX- A quote from the most pivitol time comes from the last sentence of the reading, "Don't stir my raging heart still more. Or under my own roof I may not spare your life, old man- suppliant that you are- may break the laws of Zeus!"(Fagles 365) This is Achilles telling Priam to leave and stop trying to get Hector back or he might kill him.
T- Why would Achilles act so sympathetic at first then threaten to kill Priam?
Y- This relates to me because when I want something from my brother I will occasionally play into his emotions so that he feels bad for me and gives what ever I want to me.

  3. T: In pages 359-364 of the reading, the story was summarized in Achilles and his struggles without Patroclus. Partroclus was a great friend and companion to Achilles and his death greatly affected him. It seemed that Achilles wanted some sort of revenge on Hector for killing Patroclus. Priam was lead to speak to Achilles and other warriors however Achilles resented Priam's wishes.

EX: "Let us put our griefs to rest in our own hearts, rake them no more, raw as we are with mourning." (line 158). This quote is representing the belief of ending or resolving the disagreements in new manners.

T:What was the main point to the warriors meeting with Achilles and what was the after effect on the people?

Y: THis reading was shocking to me because Achilles was in so much grief for loosing his friend and it was surprising that he didn't have any sympathy for Priam and his wishes.

  4. T- I read that both Achilles and Priam mourned together in the same household
EX- "Poor man, how much you've borne- pain to break the spirit" (Homer 363).
T- Why are Achilles and Priam suddenly so open and almost compassionate towards one another?
Y- This reading made me feel weird because they were two strong men who were enemies crying with each other.

  5. T- I read that the Gods had an argument about wether Hector should be given back to his father or not. Zeus told all Gods that they shall not steal Hector but bring his father safely to Achilles to beg for his sons body. Priam begged Achilles for his son back!
Ex- "It's all for him I've come to the ships now, to win him back from you" (Homer 362)
T- Did Achilles give Hector back to Priam??
Y- Felt so bad for Priam, for his last son to be killed and not being able to give him a heros funeral.

  6. T- I read that Priam begged Achilles to give him his sons body, being his last living heir and made Achilles grieve for his own father.
Ex-"Give him back to me, now, now more delay- I must see him with my own eyes." (Homer 364)
T- How do the men have such a deep connection and what makes Achilles side with the man?
Y- I felt empathy for Priam and Achilles, a tragedy at the very least.

  7. In tonight's reading, the gods discuss the fate of Hectors dead corpse. Most of the gods agree that Hector deserves a proper burial. But some gods and goddesses disagree. Mostly because they favor a Demigod over a mortal and see Achilles as one of their own. on page 361, Hera says to Apollo, "What company you keep now, these wretched Trojans"(76-77). My question is why do some of these gods hate the Trojans so much? Is it only because Achilles is related to them, or is it because they just don't appreciate them? I know that if my son died that I would want a proper burial and I think that even the gods should know that all men deserve proper goodbyes from their loved ones.

  8. T: Priam came to Achilles and begged him to give him his son back.
EX: "dear god, my life so cursed by my fate" (Homer 362).
T: Why was Achilles mad at Prium?
Y:This made me feel shocked because Prium wasn't mad at Achilles, but he cursed fate instead. Achilles was completely responsible for Hectors death and I was surprised Prium wasn't infuriated.

  9. T-Priam really wanted Achilles to give hector back so that he could have a proper burial.
EX-"I put to my lips the hands of the man who killed my son. Those words stirred within Achilles a deep desire to grieve for his own father" (Homer 362).
T-What does Achilles gain by not giving back Hectors body?
Y-I understand that Achilles was mad at Hector and the Trojans for killing Patroclus but at least he got his body back for a burial. Why not give the Trojans the same right

  10. T-Priam really wanted Hector's body back so he went to talk to Achilles and tried to persuade Achilles into giving Hector's body back to the people of Troy.
Ex-"Pity me in my own right, remember your own father! I deserve more pity...I have endured what no oe on earth has ever done before-I put to my lips the hands of the man who killed my son."
T-How did Priam get up the courage to go visit Achilles by himself knowing Achilles could take his life as well?
Y-I understand Achilles wanted revenge on Hector but the way he treated the body afterwards disgusts me. He should have at least returned the body to the people of Troy instead of causing them more unease by torturing Hector’s body.

  12. T-After 12 days of dragging Hector's corpse, Achillies agrees to give back the body for funeral.
Ex: "Remember your own father, great godlike Achilles—
as old as I am, past the threshold of deadly old age!" (Homer 362) Priam says this to Achillies hoping he will agree to return Hector's torn up body for a funeral.
Y-This reading made me feel a bit better that Achillies gave Hector's body back because I think Achillies is really mean to have done that to him in the first place.

  13. T-This reading was about Prium going to Achilles to ask if Achilles would give back Hector's body.
EX: "My own mind's made up to give you back your son..." (Homer 364) Achilles says this to Prium after he hears Prium's plee to get Hector's body.
T- How can Prium beg at the feet of the person that killed his son?
Y- I was happy that Achilles gave back Hector's body but I was surprised that Prium didn't even try to kill Achilles. If someone killed my child, I would probably kill them.

  14. T- I read that Priam tried to strike a kings ransom with Achilles for hectors body back.

EX-"No more, old man, dont tempt my wrath, not now." (Homer 364) This shows that Achilles makes deals with no one!

T- Why doesnt Priam try to kill Achilles? He should be mad!

Y- This makes me feel mad a Priam. He needs to stand up for himself.

  15. T-Priam wanted achilles to give hector back after they had fought and hector had lost but achilles refused and dragged him around on the back of a chariot. and didnt allow him to recive proper burial.
Ex-"I put to my lips the hands of the man who killed my son. Those words stirred within Achilles a deep desire to grieve for his own father" (Homer 362).
T-why didnt priam try and do anything about it?
Y- i was surprised that priam didnt even try to do anything about achilles

  16. T- After Achilles had been dragging Hectors body around behind a chariot, King Priam asked Achilles for Hectors body back for a proper burial.
EX-"It's all for him I've come to the ships now, to win him back from you" (Homer 362)
T- Why didn't King Priam stop Achilles from dragging Hectors body around?
Y-I thought that it was a good thing that Achilles gave Hectors body back
