  1. T-From what I learned in this book was that Hector became a great fighter in the Trojan War. I also learned that he was killed in spite of his fighting skills and the kingdom was destroyed.
EX-"... now prove yourself a spearman, a daring man of war!" (350).
T-Why did Hector have to die when he was a great fighter?
Y-This reading made me think that why should a brave man die for his country and people he loves, when he should be crowned and live?

  2. T-Something that I read was that Zeus was thinking about saving Hector's life, because Achilles was about to kill him, but instead, Zeus killed Hector, dragging him to the House of Death.
EX-"...then Father Zeus held out his sacred golden scales: in them he placed two fates of death that lays men low-one for Achilles, one for Hector breaker of horses..."(Homer 349).
T-Why did Zeus save Hector from suffering?
Y-This made me very confused, and I didn't really understand what was going on.

  3. T- Something I read about in this section was that Athena wanted Achilles to kill Hector, and she was determined to help him do it.
EX-"Athena rushed to Achilles, her bright eyes gleaming,...,"at last our hopes run high, my brilliant Achilled-we'll sweep great glory back to Achaea's fleet, we'll kill this Hector"..." (homer, 349)
T: WHy did Athena want Hector dead so bad? Why did she want Achilles to kill him?
Y: This reading makes me feel sorrowful for Hector. THere is really nothing he can do to save his life if a goddess and the best Greek fighter were both against him.

  4. T: Something i read about was the awesome fight between my main man Hector and Achilles
Ex: "Achilles flew at him...Hector fleeing along the walls of Troy...on an on they they raced..."
T: Why didn't Hector call to te aid of his felloow warrios to fight? I mean Achilles had a god helping him why can't Hector have some extra men.
Y: This relates to me because in life not a loot of fights are fair, and like sometimes in football you'll have a play where it's you against two or three guys, and even though you alread know your fate you try your hardest anyway like Hector.

  5. T- I read about the struggle for life between Achilles and Hector. Zeus caused this rivalry by placing his sacred golden scale on them. They both had to fates one for achilles and one for hector.
EX- “ At last our Hope run High,my brilliant achilles-father Zeus must love you” (Homer 349)
T-If Zeus loved achilles so much why did he cast the to fate on him? If he did it seems like they controlled their own fates at the time because he gave them both the same one.
Y-This maid me question what Zeus was thinking at the time.Did these fates he had for Achilles and Hector suppose to happen at different time did he make it Achilles fate o kill hector then have Achilles get killed any way.

  6. I read about the epic battle between the two great warriors Achilles and Hector. "...but Achilles was closing on him now like the god of war,..." (346). How did Hector have the courage to face Achilles when he knew he would most likely lose? This relates to me because tonight the Evergreen High School football team beat the Jefferson Saints 82-0. This is like the unstoppable Achilles.

  7. T: Something that I read about was the battle between Hector and Achellies .
Ex: “With that, shaft poised, he hurled and his spear’s long shadow flew but seeing it coming glorious Hector ducked away, crouching down watching the bronze tip fly past and stab the earth-but Athena snatched it up and passed it back to Achilles.” (350)
T: This was crazy. Was Athena just there watching the fight and everything that went wrong for Achilles she fixed?
Y: This relates to me with fights. Whenever my brother and I start to fight my older brother comes in and saves my little brother. I guess you could say that he is the god watching over my little brother, just like Athena watching over Achilles.

  8. T- Tonight I read about the brutal facts of the war in Homer's Epic poem. The reading was about death and betrayal.
Ex- "Better to clash in battle, now, at once- see which fighter Zeus awards the glory!"
T- Why does Zeus allow this fighting to go on when it brings him so much pain seeing the ones he loves die?
Y- Although I have never been in battle, I can understand from a religious standpoint of how God can favor one man over another in an activity or battle.

T: Te section that i read about was a battle between Hector and Achilles.
Ex: "So he wavered, waiting there, but Achilles was closing on him now like the god of war, the fighter's helmet flashing, over his right shoulder shaking the Pelian ash Spear, the terror, and the bronze around his body flared like a raging fire or rising, blazing sun. Hector looked up, saw him, started to tremble, never gone, he could hold his ground no longer..." (346)
T: Why didn't Hector just charge towards Achilles?
Y: This relates to me because when my parents and i get into fights they yell at me but i cant yell back or i will get into trouble.

  11. I read about the battle of Achilles and Hector.
"Achilles flew at him, breakneck on in fury fast as his legs would go." (347)
Why was this battle so important to Homer to elaborate on it when there is so much going on?
I feel that Homer tries to convey how this battle is important because it is the two sides best fighters against each other.

  12. T-Zeus was contemplating whether to kill or save Hector, but ended up killing him because he chose to bring him to the house of death.
EX-"My heart grieves fo rHector" (347).
T-Why did zeus kill Hector in the end? Because Hector "fled away in fear" (347)?
Y-This reading made me feel sad because at a time Hector was close to sure that he would win the Trojan War, but ended up deafeted.

  13. T- Tonight I read about the battle between Achilles and Hector.
EX- " But Achilles was closing on him now like the god of war." (346)
T- Something that doesnt make sence to me is why Achilles and Athena are ganging up on Hector and both want him dead?
Y- This makes he have mixed feelings about the event. One way sides with achilles and athena and the other side feels bad for Hector.

  14. T-I read about how Achilles and Hector battled.
EX-"And swift Achilles kept on coursing Hector, nonstop as a hound in the mountains starts a fawn from its lair, hunting him down the gorges, down the narrow glens and the fawn goes to the ground, hiding deep in brush until he lands his kill."
T-Why doesn't Zeus solve the problems instead of sending people to solve them?
Y-This reading made me want to fight someone.

  15. T: I read about the battle between Achilles and Hector and how Hector became a great warrior throughout the Trojan War.
EX: "and swift Achilles kept on coursing Hector, nonstop as a hound in the moutians starts a fawn from its lair...(pg.348)" shows tension between the too.
T: How com Helen wanted Hector to die so bad?
Y: This related to me because I have gotten into many fights with my sisters.

  16. T: I read about Achilles chasing Hector for killing his friend Patroclus.
EX: "My time has come! At last the gods have called me down to death. I thought he was at my side, the hero Deiphobus - he's safe inside the walls, Athena's ticked me blind" (351).
T: Why did Hector kill Patroclus, knowing that Achilles would probably want to avenge his death?
Y: This reading made me change my mind about this war, now I'm definitely on the Trojans' side.

  17. T- Something I learned is that people leave a lot of things to fate. Just like the story with the golden sclae.
Ex- "Either we pluck the man from death and sace his life or strike him down at last here at Achilles hands"
T What wouuld happen if Athena didn't persuade Achilles that the mortal time has come.
Y - This section made me feel sad because of the funeral and i liked homers discriptions of how everyone felt.
