  1. T: This was about how the people were dying of the plage that was going on. Everything was dying, the crops, cows, etc. Then Oedipus had an argument with his wife about who killed the the former king.
EX: "...oh smite the war of God, Father Zeus, under your thunderbolt..."
T: Why were Oedipus and his wife/mom fighting?
Y: This made me think about how sometimes I wanted something so I would ask my mom and then we would get into a fight.

  2. T-This section of reading was about how terrible the plague was and how to get rid of it. They found that to rid them of the plague they had to find and punish the murderer of King Laius, so they start this hunt.
EX-The most important part is trying to get rid of the plague, "...an oracle declaring that our freedom/ from this disease would only come when we/should learn the names of those who killed King Laius,/and kill them or expel from our country." (Grene 438).
T-How will they find the murderer?
Y-This makes me feel nervous for Oedipus's future because he will be banished or killed.

  4. T- Oedipus calls on Teiresias, a seer, in order to find the killer of king Lauis so that the plague may stop.
EX- "I know what the Lord Teiresias sees, is most often what the Lord Apollo sees." (Sophocles 304-306)
T- How will Oedipus react to Teiresias' information?
Y- I often wonder how my parents or other people will react to bad news when I tell them

  5. In this weekend's reading, Oedipus pledges to capture and punish the former king's murderer. He is also told by Teirsias that he is the murderer. My favorite quote from the reading would have to be when Teirsias says, "I say you are the murderer of the king whose murderer you seek" (Sophocles 405). I like this quote because it's very much the climax of this scene. I also like Oedipus' reaction. I think that his anger really blinds him and helps add to his character as well as the irony. I wander what it would feel like being in Teirsias' shoes. It must have been hard to tell the king this specific information. I know that I would be fairly anxious if I had to tell someone of higher authority something big like that.

  6. T: In this reading, we learn that a great plague has been set upon Oedipus people and his land. For Oedipus to protect his people, he needs as many men as possible to bring an end to this deadly disease by finding the King Laius. Oedipus believes that he can bring better life to the people again. He also wants to go to Laius that way he can see if Laius knows anything about the killer of the king. Little does he know he was the killer.
EX: "Upon the murderer I invoke this curse whether he is one man and all unknown, or one of many-may he wear our his life in misery to miserable doom." Oedipus is very strong on protecting his people and on finding the killer of the king. I think this is the most powerful quote because it overviews the situation with Oedipus and how he got to the position he was in.
T: Why was Teiresias so hesitant on telling Oedipus the truth in the beginning but then was open about him killing the king towards the end?
Y: This reading was interesting because it shows irony on how Oedipus really did kill his father (the king) and he doesn't seem to care on Teiresias thoughts or comments to the situation.

  7. T: In this reading, we learn about the plague that has overcome Oedipus' land. This plague is occuring because the kings murderer is living in the town unpunished. Oedipus calls on Teiresias to find the killer.
Ex: " I command all to drive him from their homes, since he is our pollution, as the oracle of Pytho's God proclaimed him now to me (Sophocles 261-263)". This is ironic that Oedipus is saying that the killer is polluting the land when he is infact the killer.
T:How and when will Oedipus learn he is the killer?
Y: This reading is full or irony. Everything that happens or any threat Oedipus says about the killer makes me laugh. He will take all of his threats back once he learns that he is the murderer.

  8. T: I read that there is a plague in Thebes because the murderer of the King has gone unpunished.
Ex: "Upon the murderer I invoke this curse whether he is one man...or one of many."
T: Why did Oedipus kill someone and marry someone if the prophecy was that he will kill his dad and marry his mom?
Y: This makes me feel strange because I know stuff that no one else in the play knows.

  9. T: I read that in this part of the story thebes is in trouble. So Oedipus puts a curse out on the murderer. But thats Himself.
EX: "Upon the murderer i invoke this curse- whether he is one man and all unknown, or one of many- may he wear out his life in misery to miserable doom!"(Sophocles 435)
T:When is he going to find out that he is the murderer?
Y:I think that this is funny because he cursed himeslf.

  10. T-I read that this section was about a horrible plague, and people were in fear.
EX-An eaxmple is, "...save me; redeem the debtof our pollution/ that lies on us because of this dead man" (Sophocles 438). I chose this because it is saying save me the plague is killing us and we see this through this dead man.
T- What will happen to the civilization?
Y- It relates to what were going to study. we are going to study the plague, and we have studied this before. It will be interesting to learn how devistating the effect was on the population.

  11. T- this was about the plague and how horrible it was
EX-"Upon the murderer I invoke this curse whether he is one man or one of many."
T-what will his reaction be when he figures out he was the murderer
Y-i think its weird that we know whats going on but the character doesn't

  12. T- The reading was mainly about Thebes with the plague and how awful the plague was. Also, Oedipus puts a curse on the killer, but he is the killer.
Ex- "I say you are the murderer of the king whose murderer you seek" (Sophocles 405)
T- Will he leave Thebes or confess to the murder? Will the curse upon the murderer start when he confesses or immediately?
Y- This reading is strange because we know who the murderer is but we don't know the fate of the characters/ Thebes ya know

  13. T-Throughout the reading we learn how awful the plague is and the only way to stop it is to curse the killer of King Laiuse. However, Oedipus findes out from Teiresias that Oedipus himself is the killer.
Ex-"I say you are the murdereer of the king whose murderer you seek" (Sophocles 404-405)
T- How did Teiresias find out that Oedipus was the murderer?
Y-I think this reading is very "catchy" because it involves dramatic irony. We know Oedipus killed King Laiuse and yet he has no idea who it is.

    This is gracie v!

  14. T: We read about the plague that has come to Thebes as a result the king's murder. The oracle Tiresias states the Oedipus is the killer, though he does not believe it.
Ex: " I command all to drive him from their homes, since he is our pollution.(Sophocles 261)". It is strange the Oracle proclaims that Oedipus is the killer, when he is trying to find out who it is.
Y: I think that Sophocles does a very good job putting irony into his story. It is unfortunate that Oedipus has to look for himself as the killer, though he must as the plague is taking over his town.
